EFG Press Release on Strategic Projects under the CRMA

EFG welcomes the announcement by the European Commission of the first 47 strategic projects under the Critical Raw Materials Act, a key move for securing Europe’s supply of lithium, nickel, graphite and more.
EFG calls for transparency, encouraging further data disclosure on quantitative proposals and highlights the vital role of geologists in building a responsible raw materials value chain.

EFG partners with EGPD 2025

Earlier this month, the European Geothermal PhD Days (EGPD2025) were hosted by the University of Szeged, highlighting one of the most versatile green energy sources of our time: geothermal energy. The head of the organising committee was Dr János Szanyi, who also serves as Coordinator of the EFG Panel of Experts on Geothermal.
EGPD 2025 offered insights into the latest developments in geothermal research across Europe and served as a unique platform for PhD students, early-career researchers, and professionals to network and exchange knowledge. The event welcomed 90 participants from 20 countries.

As a media partner of the event, EFG was proud to sponsor the EGPD 2025 Best Lecturer Award which went to Luka Tas from Ghent University, Belgium. The award is offering free registration for an EFG Academy course.

MFT: Mente et Malleo (With mind and hammer)

Mente et Malleo (With mind and hammer), as featured in the logo of the Hungarian Geological Society (Magyarhoni Földtani Társulat, MFT), reflects the unity of scientific thinking and fieldwork for geologists.
The European Federation of Geologists (EFG) was pleased to be represented at the 176th Annual Assembly of the Hungarian Geological Society on 26 March in Budapest by our colleague Tamás Miklovicz.
The assembly offered a valuable opportunity to better understand the structure, operations, and priorities of the second oldest geological society in Europe — helping us strengthen collaboration and support between EFG and its National Associations.

In 2024, the Hungarian Geological Society reached an impressive audience of approximately 17,800 people in Hungary through its scientific events, field trips, and public outreach programmes. As an affiliated entity of EFG, the Society also contributed to two EU-funded projects: CRM-geothermal and CEEGS project.

BDG: Meggen Raw Materials Days

The 11th Meggen Raw Materials Days, as usual organised by our German National Association, the BDG, will take place between 10 and 12 September 2025 at the Stadthalle in Lennestadt-Altenhundem. Registration is open until 14 August 2025.

The following main topics will be addressed this year:

  • Geocommunication in exploration and mining
  • New developments in the European and German mining sector
  • UNFC and the PERC reporting standard: Their complementary use in the evaluation and reporting of mineral projects.

SGF: Réunion des Sciences de la Terre

The 29th edition of the Réunion des Sciences de la Terre (RST), organised by the French Geological Society (SGF), will take place from 27 to 30 October 2025 in Montpellier. The programme for this congress will encompass nearly 100 sessions and SGF invites you to contribute by submitting your abstract by 30 June 2025.

Dialogue

Meet the EFG delegates in our video series!

“It was a great occasion to highlight the importance of geoscience in society.”
In a short video statement, Maria Tzima, President of the Association of Greek Geologists (AGG), shares her reflections on the EU Parliament Advocacy Event, organised by EFG last November.
The event brought together national geological associations, professional geologists, and Members of the European Parliament — creating an invaluable moment for dialogue between science and policy.
