Call for Strategic Projects under the CRMA

The European Commission’s Directorate General for Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs launched a second call for strategic raw materials projects under the Critical Raw Materials Act.

The CRMA designates strategic projects to increase EU capacity to extract, process and recycle strategic raw materials and diversify EU supplies from third countries. Those projects are expected to become technically feasible within a reasonable timeframe, showing expected production volumes, and implemented sustainably with a sufficient estimated confidence level.

The deadline for applications is 15 January 2026.

As the CEEGS project concludes this month, the consortium celebrates the successful completion of a pioneering European initiative that has proven the feasibility of using CO2 for clean, efficient, and safe energy storage combined with geological storage at the laboratory scale.

European Parliament session

The project is organising the panel debate “Navigating the Energy Transition: Affordable, Renewable, and Secure – Backing the Critical Raw Materials Act to Reinforce EU Strategic Autonomy”, which will take place on 20 November 2025, from 12:00 to 13:30, at the European Parliament in Brussels. The session, hosted by MEP Nicolás González Casares (S&D), will bring together policymakers, researchers, industry representatives, and civil society to explore how innovative technological solutions, such as CRM-geothermal, can support the implementation of the Critical Raw Materials Act (CRMA).

The European Commission launched a public consultation regarding a “Legislative initiative on CO2 transportation infrastructure and markets”. The deadline for contributing is 9 January 2026.

On 11 November, the ITRE Committee will hold a Public Hearing on «Carbon Capture and Storage and Carbon Capture and Utilisation».

Hydrogeology

The EU Environment Council recently approved its conclusions on the European water resilience strategy. The conclusions reflect a unified call from environment ministers for stronger, coordinated action across Europe to address the growing water challenges facing the continent and regions within the EU.

Minerals
­

This month, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the RESourceEU initiative, a plan to reduce Europe’s exposure to Chinese control of critical minerals and refining.

The European Commission also launched a call for evidence and a public consultation regarding the proposed Advanced Materials Act. The deadline for contributions is 13 January 2026.

Soil

This month, the European Parliament approved the agreement reached by the co-legislators on the proposed soil monitoring law that should ensure the good health of soils, an essential element for life in the EU. The new law will addresses contamination, including pollutants such as pesticides and PFAS, and requests a public register of contaminated sites within 10 years.
